The Associated Press - Hawai‘i’s island counties would be able to opt out of a proposed fireworks ban advancing through the Legislature. The Senate Public Safety and Military Affairs Committee passed a bill Tuesday, Feb. 9, banning consumer fireworks, except for religious or cultural events. The legislation was prompted by New Year’s Eve celebrations that fogged the air with plentiful fireworks, homemade bombs and illegal aerials. The measure now moves to the Senate Judiciary and Government Operations Committee. A separate bill pending in the House Judiciary Committee would give counties the right to adopt more restrictive rules on fireworks than exist in state law.
