Maui Economic Opportunity Inc. (MEO) recently held its annual employee awards meeting and recognized some great workers who go above and beyond the call of service during their duties for the private, nonprofit Community Action Agency. Valerie Kailihiwa was honored as MEO’s driver of the year, chosen by her peers and supervisors for her outstanding safety record and excellent driving skills. During the last four consecutive years, she has remained accident- or incident-free, and “her dedication and adherence to MEO’s professional standards is obvious on a daily basis,” according to the award’s sponsor. Also honored at the event were employees who had served 25 or more years, 20, 10, 5 and 3 years. According to MEO CEO Sandy Baz, the average tenure is seven-and-a-half years. “By keeping our turnover low, we not only save money but are able to better serve our clients with experienced, happy employees,” he said. Honored for 25 or more years of service were Carolyn Freitas, 29; Agnes Groff, 28; Debra Spencer, 27; and Fred Baisa, 25.
