Start! Heart Walk

Help raise funds to save lives.

Commentary contributed by Danielle Bergen · AHA Volunteer Chairperson · Nāpili

Every March, the American Heart Association holds its Start! Heart Walk on Maui.  Nationwide more than one million walkers participate in more than 400 Start! Heart Walk events across the country, raising funds to save lives from our country’s No.1 and No. 3 killers, heart disease and stroke. As this year’s Maui Start! Heart Walk Chairman, I urge Maui businesses to help raise funds for this valuable cause on Saturday, March 27.

Last year, well over 500 people participated on Maui. Our goal this year is to raise $100,000 to fund the AHA’s community and professional education programs, cardiovascular research and health advocacy. Local sponsors include Maui Electric Company, Kilakila Employer Services, HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union, VIP Foodservice, Oceanic Time Warner Cable and many more. Employees of company teams like Macy’s and the County of Maui lead the way in not only raising funds, but in setting a healthy example by having fun and developing camaraderie by walking together. It is not too late to get your team involved. It is a wonderful way to create employee competition and an excellent start to get your staff exercising on a daily basis.

Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for approximately 38 percent of all Hawai‘i deaths annually. In 2007 heart disease, stroke, hypertension and other circulatory disease killed more women in Hawai‘i than cancer, lower respiratory diseases, accidents and diabetes combined. Almost everyone has lost a family member, co-worker, friend or spouse to this deadly disease.
