Jake Shimabukuro’s virtuosity defies label or category. He views Hawai‘i’s signature instrument, the ‘ukulele, as an “untapped source of music with unlimited potential.” He’s on a mission to show everyone that the ‘ukulele is capable of so much more than traditional Hawaiian music.

Rockin’ the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater stage on Saturday, March 27, Shimabukuro won’t disappoint his audience. Attendees will hear an exciting mix of hot jazz and popular rock, perennial island favorites as well as moving melodies including Annon, which he wrote in celebration of Shin Buddhism Founder Shinran Shonin’s 750th memorial service. The EP album was released last fall. From his Live record, which just won a 2010 Hawai‘i Music Award in the ‘ukulele category, Shimabukuro will likely perform his exciting interpretation of Thriller, the song made famous by Michael Jackson, and George Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps, which might be his best cover song to date.

Shimabukuro is renowned the world over for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques. His shows dazzle audiences with intricate strumming and plucking, electrifying high-energy grooves and deeply felt melodic ballads. Jake has said he expresses himself through the ‘ukulele—and he’s been doing that since his first lesson at 4 years old.

From a modest beginning performing at a Honolulu café, Jake’s career has evolved to playing renowned venues and popular festivals across the globe. Recently, he has performed on stage with the divine Bette Midler. In January, for her final show in Las Vegas, Bette invited Shimabukuro to revisit their duet of John Lennon’s In My Life, which they performed for Queen Elizabeth II of England in December.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Preshow dining beginning at 5:30 p.m. will be catered by Alexander’s Famous Fish.

Tickets are $12, $30 and $40 (plus applicable fees). Call the Box Office at 242-SHOW (7469) or buy online at MauiArts.org.
