The all-volunteer organization is headed by Pukalani residents Charlotte and Dan Flavin, who will also give a free, public slide-talk about their work in Nicaragua at the University of Hawai‘i Maui College on Friday April 23, at 7 p.m. in Ka Lama 103.
Volunteers from Maui who have accompanied them will share their experiences, and Nicaraguan music and culture.
Somos Amigos Nicaragua raises money to make annual summer visits to small Nicaraguan villages, bringing participants from Maui and the Mainland to contribute their skills. The teams have built schools and houses, installed a water system and a solar-powered pump, funded scholarships and provided healthcare services.
Somos Amigos Nicaragua are holding a yard sale to help build a pre-school in the village of Rancho Pando. Current classes are held under trees and tarps on a dirt floor.
This summer, they will build a pre-school in the village of Rancho Pando and help repair a primary school in Mayocunda. The team will also install a small library in the small high school they completed last summer. This school replaced classes held under trees and now serves 120 secondary students. All proceeds from the yard sale will be used for additional school construction
A Spanish-speaking speech therapist is being sought to accompany the group.
