Pro-Arts Inc. presents Sleeping Beauty at its new Pro Arts Playhouse in the Azeka Shopping Center Makai on S. Kīhei Road in Kīhei Friday through Sunday, June 18 through 20.
In this fractured-fairy-tale version of the classic Grimm Brothers’ story, nine actors play all of the parts. The musical is written and produced by Doug Kendrick and Jonathan Lehman, who also directs the production. Clay Logue is the musical director and accompanist.
“We are very lucky to have some of Maui’s most gifted and experienced performers working with us on this production,” said Lehman. “Also we are blessed to have the top creative people on island assisting us as well. Kathleen Schulz is the costumier, Caro Walker has designed the set and Bonnie Prucha is our lighting designer.”
The musical is complete with a beautiful princess (Cyndi Mayo Davis), a handsome prince with a magic sword (Tom Althouse), a doting king (Paul Janes-Brown) and queen (Barbara Sedano) and their story-telling assistant (Rose Roselinsky), a wise-cracking vulture and a psychic frog (both by Cameron Sparks). A bad fairy (Dale Button) is included to make things difficult, but good fairies (Kristi Scott and Jett Batoon) ensure a happy ending.
Audience members are seated right next to the stage for a surround-theatre experience. The play is appropriate for family audiences—kids, parents, and grandparents will all enjoy this new version of the beloved tale.
“After the performance, the audience is invited to meet the characters one-on-one, completing this magical theatrical event,” said Kendrick.
Performances are Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 4 and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 4 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for attendees 10 and under or 62 and over.
Paul Janes-Brown stars as King Thurston and Barbara Sedano shines as Queen Lovie in ProArts’s production of Sleeping Beauty.
