The event will include a silent auction with valuable prizes and live music provided by local musicians. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used for construction at the school.
The all-volunteer organization headed by Charlotte and Dan Flavin, a retired couple from Pukalani, raises money annually for trips to northern Nicaraguan villages every summer. They also bring participants from Maui and the Mainland who contribute their skills to the construction efforts.
The ‘ohana has already built three schools—a kindergarten, an elementary school and a high school. This summer, the crew renovated another elementary school. They have also installed a water system and a solar-powered pump, and funded transportation scholarships for college students.
Every year, Jim Kahler of Wailuku, a volunteer physical therapist, travels with them to provide free health services to handicapped adults and children.
All projects involving labor and local resources are fully partnered by participants from the local community members who contribute their “sweat equity.”
