It is difficult to determine who to vote for, because most do not offer detailed plans. Therefore, we decided to publish the following 12-point plan and ask all candidates if they will support it.
We recognize that the county government has limited influence on our energy future. Most of the decisions are made by the Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) and the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) in Honolulu. There are also budget limitations.
Therefore, the following plan for a Maui County agenda for clean energy is comprised of steps that don’t cost much money and will be positive for the budget. Many are not new and have been proposed many times by clean energy experts, Mayor Charmaine Tavares’ working groups and many others.
