“This is a great opportunity for Maui families to get into the spirit of the harvest season, find the ideal pumpkin for their home decorations and have a fun time,” said Project Director Ann Emmsley, associate professor of agriculture.
With seven pumpkin varieties to choose from, the options in the UHMC Agriculture Department fields range in size from ornamentals to 24-pound globes plumped up by a crew of UHMC students over the summer.
Large varieties, including Aladdins, Gladiators and Magic Lanterns, weigh in at 15 to 25 pounds. Mid-range varieties include Magician and Field Trip. Bumpkin and Baby Bear top out at 2.5 pounds.
The harvest event will include crafts sales, face painting for keiki, dental hygiene demonstrations, pumpkin soup prepared by Maui Culinary Academy students, and displays and information on UH Maui College and the University of Hawai‘i system programs.
