United Way’s mission to empower the community through caring partnerships that enrich people’s lives hasn’t changed since the nonprofit was first established here over 64 years ago. This charitable organization continues to strengthen our community by addressing the county’s most vital health and human service needs. MUW strives to build strong communities by convening its leaders to seek solutions to problems, and currently serves 27 partner agencies and programs throughout the Magic Isles.
The elegant affair will highlight MUW’s partner agencies and programs, and the valuable services each organization provides the community. According to Laksmi Abraham, president and chief professional officer of MUW, the organization has recognized that economic and social changes have shifted priorities. MUW is currently refocusing its impact areas to education, income and health to coincide with United Way Worldwide in 2011.
“Even in our trying economic times, the people of Maui have truly stepped up to the plate to assist Maui United Way and our partner agencies,” said Abraham. “Our gala is designed to continue that momentum and keep our partner agencies ‘top of mind’ here on Maui and throughout Hawai‘i Nei.”

MUW works to advance the common good of community residents by supporting programs that encourage quality education to acquire a stable job; finding ways to earn enough income to support a family through retirement; and preserving good health for all.
“Our goal is to create long-lasting changes by addressing the underlying causes of problems,” added Abraham. “In addition, MUW will be shifting to programmatic funding to better connect its donors with results they can see.”
The gala will feature the vocal genius and styling of Moloka‘i’s very own two-time Grammy-nominated and six-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winner Raiatea Helm. Maui’s vivacious “Morning Goddess,” Alaka‘i Paleka of KPOA, will serve as mistress of ceremonies.
Begin your charitable evening in Wailea with cocktail entertainment from captivating and multi-talented Maui performers Kanoa and Jessica Rabbitt, followed by a “New Wave inspired” lū‘au experience. There will also be a silent auction for guests to peruse and plenty of remarkable members of the community to keep the goodwill flowing all night long.
