Hanzawa’s is a small, family-owned retail outlet—the only one around for miles, providing numerous items to the local community. It allows many of us to support local farmers plus provides employment for a few individuals, saving the need to venture into town. Their modest proposal was totally sensitive to the unique rural environment in which it is located. What a wonderful gift Hanzawa’s is to hundreds of East Maui/Upcountry residents.
Hanzawa’s is one of the last of its kind, in a disappearing reality, as Maui continues to be overrun with high-end homes in gated communities; condos built upon beaches with access blocked to the local community. Consider the location of the old West Maui airport, the serenity gone forever, now infested with a fungus of timeshares.
Nevertheless, the Daniells’ plans were stopped by a few disgruntled individuals, with a vendetta driving them onward, who had the ear of members of our local legislative body. With some members of our Maui County Council who lack the awareness to distinguish between a beneficial addition to an area and a development of hundreds of units being fast-tracked and proposed as affordable, it appeared the project was doomed almost from the outset.
What a depressing situation we truly find ourselves in. Good people, helping the community, blocked in their vision for improving our rural lifestyle.
