Hale Kau Kau Golf Tournament Honors Long-Time Supporter

November 18, 2010
Maui Weekly

This year’s charitable golf tournament will honor one of its co-founders and long-time supporters, H. Robert Hoy, who passed away earlier this year. Winners of the three-man scramble will have their names placed on the “Bob Hoy Memorial Cup,” which will be displayed at the Wailea Old Blue pro shop.

Following his retirement as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Hoy began working for Wailea Resort Company in 1975 as its director of security, a position he held until his death in May. Together with Mike O’Dwyer, owner of Mulligan’s On the Blue, Hoy established the charitable golf tournament that has raised nearly $100,000 since its inception for the “Feeding the Needy” program.

The Bob Hoy Memorial Cup is being donated by Wailea Old Blue Golf.

“We’re very happy to provide the cup in honor of our friend and colleague,” said Barry Helle, general manager of Wailea Old Blue. “Bob was an avid golfer and he cared deeply about our local community. We’re glad to help this tournament raise funds a great cause.”

The entry fee for the tournament is $140 per person, or $375 for a three-person team, and includes lunch, dinner, entertainment, awards and prizes, including a Toyota car, hotel stays and more.

Participants can sign up in person at Mulligan’s On the Blue at the Wailea Old Blue or by calling call Tina Brophy at 874-1131.

“By sponsoring this charitable event, Mulligan’s wants to give back to the Maui community which has been so wonderful in supporting us over the past nine years in establishing a true Irish pub and restaurant in the great tradition of the ‘Old Sod,’ as we say in Ireland,” O’Dwyer said. “We want to make the event fun for everyone, which is why we’re giving prizes for the teams with the lowest scores as well.”

Hale Kau Kau, founded in 1991, is a nonprofit organization located at St. Theresa Church in Kīhei. The program serves nutritious evening meals on-site to those in need, and delivers meals to homebound elderly and disabled residents every day of the year.
