Gannon’s, A Pacific View Restaurant

Stunning food and stellar views.

Located in Wailea Golf Club’s imposing edifice, Gannon’s sits at the top of one of South Maui’s loveliest entry-drives with dazzling mauka and makai views from Mākena to Molokini, Kaho‘olawe and beyond.

“Come in a little after dark,” said owner and award-winning chef Bev Gannon. “You won’t believe how beautiful it is—the lighting and the colors.”

Already the talk of the town for its Red Bar “happy hour” fare from 3 to 6 p.m. daily, Gannon’s dinner menu features scrumptious appetizers like Shrimp Stuffed Crabcake, Seared Scallops and a Traditional Sashimi Plate and inspired salads of the freshest ingredients. Stellar entrees to delight the most discerning palette include Pecan Crusted Mahi, Tandoori Loin of Lamb, Steak Frites and Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli.

Enjoy a spectacular Maui sunset and delightful island cuisine at Gannon’s, A Pacific View Restaurant.

And Gannon’s extensive wine list is most impressive, too.

“We’re so much more than just ‘happy hour,’” Bev said.

Gannon’s officially opened on Dec. 21, 2009, after taking over The Seawatch restaurant in the same location about four months earlier.

“When someone offers you a restaurant with stunning views and a location perfect for expanding the catering side of your business, well—we did it,” Bev said.

Catering corporate affairs, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions is a big part of Gannon’s and Bev said South Maui is a great place for it.

She said another impetus for opening Gannon’s was, “What can I do next?” Twenty-two years ago Bev and her husband Joe opened the continually popular restaurant, Hāli‘imaile General Store. Seven years later, they opened Joe’s in Wailea and it’s an island favorite, too.

“And now people can see this version of what we do,” Bev said.

When asked about the challenges of opening a new restaurant, Bev said, “I wish everybody who came to Gannon’s when we first opened would come again. They should come again.”

She went on to say opening a restaurant is akin to a new coach taking over a basketball team.

“When you first open, everybody has to learn how to work together to become a great team,” she said.

She said the staff at Gannon’s has become a great team and she believes the restaurant will become, “an icon [of great dining] in the neighborhood.”

Chris and Dan Himmelberg from Orange County, Calif., drove all the way from their time-share in Kā‘anapali to dine at Gannon’s. They were celebrating their 21st wedding anniversary and friends staying in Wailea recommended the restaurant.

“For an appetizer I had the Crab, Lobster, Tomato Tower,” Chris said, “and oh it was so good. The description doesn’t even come close to how good it was.”

She said her entree of Miso Glazed Walu with wasabi mashed potatoes, and Dan’s Braised Short Ribs dinner were “fabulous!”

“And our server Janet was wonderful, too,” Chris said. “We’re definitely coming back when we’re on Maui next May.”

I also talked to Kaua‘i resident and former LPGA player Mary Bea Porter-King earlier that day. Although the president and co-founder of the Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association was busy at the golf course helping run the Tournament of Champions, she said she and her husband Charlie had dinner at Gannon’s the night before with friends from Upcountry.

“I highly recommend it,” Mary Bea said. “We had a casual dinner at the bar about 6:30 p.m. It has a great atmosphere with great food and wines.”

Calgary, Alberta, first-time Maui visitors Ariana and Stuart Mooney chose to dine at Gannon’s three nights out of the eight they were on Maui.

“I found it on the Web,” Stuart said, “and it looked interesting, so we came the first time. The food and the view kept us coming back.”

“We went to two or three other places, too, but the atmosphere, beautiful lighting and outdoor dining makes this our favorite,” Ariana added.

I’ll be returning to Gannon’s, A Pacific View Restaurant, too. The Carpaccio of Beets, Shaved Fennel Salad has me hooked. The friendly staff—from General Manager Rebecca Schillaci to Jaison Marconyak, my server, made my restaurant experience an absolute nighttime delight.

Gannon’s is located at the Wailea Golf Club, 100 Wailea Golf Club Drive, Wailea.
