County should do more than just cleanup

January 20, 2011

Let’s look at a larger picture. Within the same few weeks we were having “The Great Kīhei Holiday Flood of 2010” and record-breaking rainfall in Kahului, over 200,000 people about 4,700 miles away from us in Queensland, Australia were also affected (including the loss of lives, homes and businesses) by huge flood. Coincidence? Both just places notorious for flooding? Does “global warming” ring a bell?

As Renate Kemp of Mā‘alaea puts its, this is not an “Act of God,” and yes, the county can do something more than just patching up and cleaning up before it happens again.

But we should all be aware that there’s something everybody can and should do if we want to preserve Maui and our earth as beautiful as it is for our children, grandchildren to come.

Bringing your own shopping bag is a great start!
