The bags cannot go to the landfill because they may get caught in an updraft wind and get blown out to sea.
CWD will accept these bags from retailers and redistribute them to the community for use as dog waste bags and garbage bags. In order to receive the plastic bags, residents must present three reusable shopping bags to demonstrate that they are aware of the plastic bag ban.
Call CWD at 877-2524 or email email@example.com for more information.
CWD is also organizing a “Keeping it Clean and Green in Häna” recycling event from Tuesday through Saturday, Jan. 25 through 29, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will take place in the parking lot across from Old Hasegawa General Store on the makai side of Hāna Highway towards Hamoa.
CWD will accept appliances, scrap metal, tires, TVs, computers, electronics, microwaves, propane tanks, household and vehicle batteries. CWD will not accept vehicles, furniture or green waste. A $5 recycling fee will be assessed per tire.
Keeping it Clean and Green in Hāna will be held in partnership with the County of Maui, Department of Environmental Management, Abandoned Vehicles and Metals Program; Hotel Häna-Maui, Maui Tire Recycling, Maui Tow & Transport, and Hammerhead Metals Recycling.
