Yet the Maui Ocean Center has hired legal counsel to challenge the humane treatment bill before the Maui County Counsel, claiming just the opposite—that these practices are “dynamic health remedies” for the captured fish. I wonder how supporting these egregious practices benefits Maui Ocean Center, and why a center “dedicated to fostering understanding, wonder and respect for Hawai‘i’s marine life” would support legal action to ban more humane treatment of the fish. I wonder how a for-profit center like yours stands to profit from blocking this bill.
I urge local media to cover this bill, an important step to regulating the catch and methods of the aquarium trade industry. I urge my island friends and Mainland visitors, along with their many networks, to boycott your center and its subsidiary businesses until such a time that the center demonstrates true responsibility toward the ecosystem on which it has built its profits. This means abandoning support for aquarium trade practices that profit the traders but decimate the ecosystem.
We will be watching Maui Ocean Center carefully for signs that it understands its kuleana in regard to the ocean ecosystems it purports to foster respect and understanding for.
