Take care of ‘āina first

February 10, 2011
Maui Weekly

Douglas Gray of the Eclipse Development Group (see “Retail Centers Set Mauka of Pi‘ilani Highway” in last week’s Maui Weekly) and his kind need to be educated that these islands were not created for the purpose of giving them “exciting opportunities” to make themselves wealthier than they already are. What can be so exciting about ruining another 75 acres to build something that we don’t need?

Kīhei does not need a “destination point” that is solely dedicated to making a few people rich, while the rest of us barely survive on the minimum wage jobs that are generated by “national brand name tenants.” Kīhei needs schools. Kīhei needs affordable housing.

Let’s take care of the needs of our ‘ohana first, before we waste our time and resources on addressing the destructive wants of someone who doesn’t even live here.
