Save the monkey pods

March 31, 2011
Maui Weekly

We walk from Kama‘ole II to Wailea and back frequently during visits to Maui. There are stretches of this walk that have no sidewalk and there are stretches that have sidewalks with “heaves” due to tree roots. Is the answer to remove all offending trees on Maui? No, the answer is to collectively come up with creative solutions. Trees are vital to the health of our environment, provide habitat for birds and other tiny species not to mention the beauty and shade they provide for us constantly. These trees also have historical significance!

I firmly agree with the Maui County Arborist Committee to have these designated as “Exceptional Trees.” They truly are! I hope when we arrive next year, we will see the trees forever protected!
