My experiences were mixed. On wait times, I often got rides immediately, but several times I waited over one-and-a-half hours. It was disheartening to see so many solo drivers pass by in big, empty vehicles. But for those who picked me up, it was great—good conversations and fun to connect with a new person and share experiences.
Environmentally, hitchhiking is a good option for less carbon emissions. Climate change is here now, and we all need to do our part and drive less. In rural areas where buses are minimal, hitching is a good option. I heard of no safety problems and had none.
We all need to do our part to lower carbon emissions. Next time you drive by a hitchhiker, pick them up. You will be carpooling and lowering emissions, you might have a good conversation and you will be showing your aloha spirit.
