While MHS works to address animal neglect and cruelty, we also have an eye on the pet owners of tomorrow. People who are well-informed about animals--their unique needs and characteristics, and the relationship they have with humans--are more likely to appreciate and respect them as living, breathing, feeling creatures. And educating children to be humane while exploring the joys of the human-animal bond has many other benefits, as well. Humane Education helps children use their creativity, imagination, compassion, and intellect. Studies show that children who are taught compassion and kindness tend to develop higher self-esteem, learning that they themselves are special and unique and can attain their dreams. Such children have proven to be more involved in activities both in their youth and as adults, and they grow up to be more concerned and involved citizens overall.
So how can you help nurture the human-animal bond with your keiki? Sign them up for summer Animal Camp at the Maui Humane Society! Weekly themes are designed for children between the ages of 11-14. Program size is limited and most sell out early, so don’t wait. For more information on Animal Camp programs, costs, and registration call 877-3680 ext 20 or visit mauihumanesociety.org
