Growing Dreams will celebrate its 11th year with a “Retro Color Explosion.” The event features Floral Trend Consultant Kevin Ylvisaker as the guest floral designer. Ylvisaker will work with splashes of color reminiscent of the 1960s, when tie-dye and jeans were the trend.
Ylvisaker, a freelance designer with his company, KLY Floral International, is a certified member of the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) and past president of the organization. Among his many floral experiences, Ylvisaker was a member of the Design Team for the Inauguration of President George Bush Sr. in Washington, D.C., in 1989. He was also a Design Team Captain for the Inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1993.
“Many of us, including myself, grew up in the ’60s when things were new and colors were vibrant,” Ylvisaker said. “This show will take us back in time to explore how those colors and trends influenced the design styles of today. So if you’re in the mood to be feeling groovy, this is the show to see.”
Kevin Ylvisaker will be the featured floral designer at this year’s Growing Dreams fundraiser for Maui Youth & Family Services on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Fairmont Kea Lani Resort in Wailea from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.myfs.org.
“We are thrilled to be returning to the Fairmont Kea Lani this year,” said Growing Dreams 2011 Chairperson Helen McCord, owner of Kula Botanical Gardens on Maui. “Growing Dreams is a very unique event, partnering the beautiful flowers of the island with an agency that builds better lives with Hawai‘i’s families.”
Maui Youth & Family Services is a comprehensive social services agency. Its mission is “Building better lives with Hawai‘i’s families.” For more than 33 years, MYFS has accomplished this mission by offering a continuum of services for adolescents and their families, including foster family programs, prevention programs and outpatient treatment for substance abuse, and behavioral health treatment.
In addition to a fabulous luncheon and floral design workshop, there will also be silent and live auctions. The Growing Dreams committee is seeking corporate sponsors and auction donations for the MYFS fundraising event.
“As fun and glamorous as Growing Dreams always is, we want to remember what it’s all about,” added McCord. “Ultimately, the show helps MYFS provide services for Maui’s at-risk children. We believe that regardless of their circumstances, youth can reach their goals with the help of caring, loving foster families and staff members. All of the proceeds from Growing Dreams remain on Maui and are used to provide essentials for our programs.”
