Part of the reason is that the salon is situated in a building that has been built “green.” The energetic, conscious commitment to sustainability initiated by builder DKK Properties is carried through in Tropical Trenz’ build-out with recycled and sustainable materials, including bamboo cupboards and floors. Kim’s ex-husband, Contractor Kevin Jones, stepped up to the plate—or sink, in this case—to help create a space and a model to emulate.
Tropical Trenz is wo-manned by a trio of experts in their fields, “committed to vibrant healthy hair, skin and nails,” with special focus on skin care, including facials and anti-aging treatments.
“We love what we do,” said Kim, a veteran colorist and stylist. “Team member Lisa Archer, an experienced nail technician, is not only extremely meticulous in her service, but imbues it with her enjoyment for the work. Enthusiasm is an energetic plus in the salon.”

Rounding out the trio is Kim’s longtime friend, stylist Judy Clemens, who moved back from the Midwest to help manage the salon.
When I arrived for a pedicure and manicure, a couple from the Mainland was enjoying some of the salon’s special offerings. The wife was having her hair colored and styled by Kim before going back home, and the husband was receiving a scalp, neck and shoulder massage from Judy. I don’t think I have seen a happier man!
Paying attention to the body as a whole, Tropical Trenz offers internationally recognized, top-of-the-line products from head to toe. High-end Paul Mitchell products from his awapuhi line include low-ammonia hair coloring, sulfate-free shampoos and styling products developed as Mitchell began to awakening to the need to “reduce, reuse, recycle, respect” our natural resources. Products contain the juice of the awapuhi ginger, a plant with special hydrating properties, grown sustainably on Hawai‘i Island with no animal testing.
Tropical Trenz’ extensive offerings include a skin-cleansing system by Clarisonic, which organized a program to work with cancer patients to help lift their spirits and self-esteem. The salon also uses NuFace, a micro-current facial toning device, which Kim calls a “face lift in a box.” The hand-held device, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is designed to stimulate and tone the face in five minutes. Tropical Trenz also offers an extensive menu of products from Comfort Zone, an award-winning Italian skincare line that utilizes many natural ingredients.
Tropical Trenz’ services range from haircuts and color, Brazilian keratin treatments, perms and hair extensions to waxing and nail beautification.
I tried out the latest nail craze—nail shellac, a coating set with a short burst of UV light that keeps polish looking flawless for 14 days. Shellac by Creative Nail Design is hypoallergenic, with no formaldehyde, and is removed in a 10-minute process using acetone wraps. Nails remain healthy.
My testimonial? After a two-and-a-half-week visit with my kids, doing dishes, playing baseball, gardening and staining teak furniture, my beautifully manicured and shellaced nails look as if I had just left the salon.
Reclining in a comfortable zero-gravity chair, I took in the esthetically pleasing wholeness of Tropical Trenz, enjoying a spa pedicure treatment I can only describe as sensorial deliciousness! Essential oils with a beautiful foot bowl used for soaking rejuvenated me as I was pampered by lovely Lisa.
