Leash Your Dog – It's The Law

August 11, 2011
Maui Weekly

Allowing dogs to wander or run off-leash is illegal on Maui. With very few exceptions, dogs are required to be restrained at all times. Pet owners who allow their dogs to roam free are putting the animal’s welfare at risk, creating a nuisance to neighbors and a possible danger to humans, domestic pets, and wildlife. When leashed, a dog is safe from traffic and unable to follow their instinct to chase children or other pets, investigate garbage cans, or dig up landscaping. Even for the friendliest dog, a leash is required to keep him in check so the public can pass undisturbed. Not everyone loves dogs, and many people are afraid of dogs. Even those of us who adore dogs are unnerved when we see a strange dog racing towards us or our pet. When dog owners show little consideration for others, more doors close to dogs; if dog owners respect the law and act thoughtfully, more

businesses and public areas will put out the welcome mat for dogs.

Maui County’s leash laws are meant to keep you, your dog, and others in our community safe. We urge you, as a responsible pet owner, to abide by them. For details on Maui’s leash laws, visit www.MauiHumaneSociety.org.
