A honu journey

September 1, 2011
Maui Weekly
Maui Ocean Center (MOC) Assistant Curator Jim Luecke and Councilman Mike White (Makawao, Ha‘ikū and Pā‘ia) delivered an excited 2-year-old honu into the wild last Thursday, Aug. 25, off the shores of Kā‘anapali Beach. Over 100 spectators watched eagerly as five lucky juvenile green sea turtles received a formal ocean introduction during MOC’s “Holomua na Honu” event, part of the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle Educational Loan Program, in partnership with Sea Life Park Hawai‘i. This outreach program is geared towards education, conservation and the enhancement of the public’s awareness of the ocean and its precious creatures. Visit www.mauioceancenter.com to learn more.
