Economy built on sand

September 1, 2011
Maui Weekly

Today, we dream of building a society apart from God; a world where men and women might live wholly sufficient unto themselves, satisfying their needs and desires through their own ingenuity.

In his “Sermon on the Mount,” Jesus speaks of building one’s house’s foundation upon either sand or upon rock. Those who build on sand do so only on visible and tangible things: on success, career and money. These may seem as true reality, but one day they will pass away.

We see this happening now with our collapsing economic systems. God, however, who is infinite, is stable like heaven. Hence, we must change our concept of reality. We must return to our moral roots.
