Nonprofit Seeks Support for Nicaraguan Projects

September 29, 2011
Maui Weekly

The event will include a silent auction with valuable prizes and live music provided by local musicians Damian Paiva and Roots Hawai‘i. A portion of the money from every pizza sold between 5 and 10 p.m. will be donated by the Flatbread Co. to the organization.

Dan and Charlotte Flavin, founders of the 501(c) 3 based in Pukalani, recently returned from their 11th consecutive summer working with the people of small villages in the municipality of Villanueva, Department of Chinandega. In the past, they have built three schools, and renovated another. This summer, they completed a water system for one of the schools and the surrounding village.

Somos ‘Ohana Nicaragua is now raising funds for the summer of 2012, when they will build a preschool in a remote village. The name of the village, “La Esperanza,” means “hope,” and that is what early childhood education will give the children for whom the funds are being raised.

Volunteers with skills to share and the desire to help are always welcome to work with the organization. Although Spanish language ability is desirable, it is not necessary. However, the group is seeking a volunteer Spanish-speaking speech therapist.

Volunteers pay their own way to the Central American country and a modest daily fee to the families with whom they stay.
