The Maui News - The county Department of Transportation plans to use a $1.8 million federal grant to buy as many as 13 new vehicles for the Maui Bus system, with an eye toward expanding service to the Kula area.
The county expects the Federal Transit Administration grant, which will be matched by $445,000 in county funds in an 80-to-20 ratio, to provide enough funds to purchase two 37-passenger buses, one 25-passenger bus and 10 paratransit vehicles, according to county Department of Transportation Director Jo Anne Johnson Winer. The 25-passenger bus and some of the paratransit vehicles are being considered for use on the proposed Kula route, which will be included in next year's proposed fiscal budget, said Johnson Winer.
