A Community Paint Exchange and recycling event will be held in the parking lot of Whole Foods Market at Maui Mall in Kahului on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Items accepted at this event include usable paint, primer and stains, and batteries of all types, including vehicle batteries. No other household hazardous waste products will be accepted. Free, usable paint will also be offered to residents at the event.
Additionally, wire baskets will be available for an $8 deposit. Wire baskets allow for drainage and help keep beverage containers clean and sorted.
"We are always trying to think of ways to make recycling easier," said Community Work Day Program (CWDP) Executive Director Rhiannon Chandler. "Every little bit helps."
Unusable paint will not be accepted at the event or at the county landfill in liquid form. Unusable paint should be mixed with cat litter, lawn clippings or saw dust to solidify it so it can be accepted at the landfill.
With a grant from the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management Recycling Section, CWDP operates the County of Maui's Community Paint Recycling Program and Household Battery Recycling Program.
Reusable paint is accepted at CWDP Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Paint is offered for free to the public, schools and nonprofit organizations, and is also used for graffiti cleanups, beautification projects, and the annual "Paint-a-Can" program.
Wire baskets are also available for an $8 deposit, and available on loan for free to support recycling at community events. Baskets can be picked up during CWDP's normal business hours.
