Ban cane smoke

November 10, 2011
The Maui Weekly

How many Kihei people remember when the county legislated public smoking citing the numerous inherent health risks associated with side stream cigarette smoke?

Isn't it hypocritical that they went through the whole process, yet entirely excluded the largest cigarette on the island? I'm referring to the antiquated and terribly inefficient practice of cane burning.

Anyone who has ever awakened to that smell-coughing with burning eyes, a running nose... not to mention asthma attacks, emphysema and all the other signs of mass poisoning-can, look no further than the beloved black ash collected everyplace to consider that there are no known chemical profiles to detail exactly what it is we are being forced to breathe. It is high time for the elected cavalcade of clown suits masquerading as council members to quit blowing smoke in our faces.
