Alcohol ban for S. Maui parks pitched

November 10, 2011
The Maui Weekly

The Maui News - Maui County Councilman Don Couch is proposing legislation that would ban drinking in several popular South Maui parks. The measure would prohibit alcohol consumption at Kalama Park, Cove Park and the new South Maui Community Park in Kihei. Couch introduced the measure last week. It was referred to the council's Economic Development, Agriculture and Recreation Committee for future discussion. Couch said he made the proposals after receiving complaints from park users and community members.

"Instructors at Kalama Park facilities and neighborhood residents approached me about a possible alcohol ban because of concerns over the safety of youth who frequent the park," he said. "These county parks and playgrounds should be family-friendly places where children can play without fear of being bothered by people who have had too much to drink."

He also noted that police had responded to numerous incidents at Cove Park in the past year, many for disorderly conduct associated with drinking.
