The Maui News - Alexander & Baldwin (A&B) Properties Inc. took a step forward on a major project last week when the state Land Use Commission voted unanimously to accept the company's environmental impact statement on its massive Waiale development in Wailuku and Waikapu.
The project would add 2,550 residential units to 545 acres in Central Maui if built out. While last week's decision clears a hurdle, it doesn't address the merits of the project itself. A&B is expected to return to the LUC in February for hearings on land-use entitlements for the development. The company also must receive zoning change approvals from the Maui Planning Commission and Maui County Council.
