The Maui News - Former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann (D) ramped up his campaign to win votes on the Neighbor Islands by collecting the endorsement of ILWU Local 142 last week at its union hall in Wailuku.
In a news conference, Hannemann said he was "humbled and honored" to receive the backing of Hawai'i's largest private-sector union, with 20,000 members statewide and around 15,000 on Neighbor Islands. Hannemann (D) is seeking the 2nd Congressional District seat being vacated by Mazie Hirono.
She is vying for the U.S. Senate seat held by Daniel Akaka, who is retiring. Responding to a reporter's question about his obvious enthusiasm for the campaign to return to political office, Hannemann said, "I'm like a player sidelined, dying to get back in the game."
