Kula Community Association teams with local artists to benefit PTA and Book Trust.

Upcountry Maui will be well represented all year long with the help of Douglas Chun, Curtis Wilson Cost, George Allan and nine other renowned artists.

The Kula Community Association (KCA) is selling 2012 Upcountry Calendars to help raise money for the Kula Elementary PTA and the Book Trust.

”Crater Trail” by Maggie T. Sutrov represents the month of August in the 2012 Upcountry Calendar. “I painted this scene at the top of Sliding Sands trail as the afternoon light lit the colors of the cinders,” she wrote. “This is my favorite spot in the world.”

The unique calendar and gift idea includes special views of Upcountry Maui including "Maui Light" by Linda Turnbull, a charming Makawao house by Judy Bisgard, and "Purple Cows" on Hanamu Road by Martha Haulani Vockrodt.

Each artwork includes a description of the work below the painting.

Understanding what the artists saw or felt is what makes this calendar so special.

Curtis Cost conveys the uniqueness of this calendar with his "Heart's Desire." He is inspired to paint views of places that "are sadly disappearing" from Upcountry Maui.

George Allan's "Wai'opai Roundup," depicts the southern part of Haleakala Ranch, west of Kaupo Ranch and east of 'Ulupalakua Ranch on the slopes of Haleakala. Nu'u Bay, known locally as "Plenty Kiawe," is pictured in the background."

Douglas Chun's "Upcountry Dusk" captures the evolving views from Upcountry. "Maui changes by the hour," Chun writes.

The artworks complement the months of the calendar. "Moonset-Sunrise" by Betty Hay Freeland is picture-perfect for November and "Paniolo Country" by Michael Clements sets the tone for December.

"We were blessed to have submissions from many local artists," said KCA President Ron Montgomery. "The selection process was difficult. It is not often you can find a calendar with works from well-known artists like Susan Conway Kean, whose painting depicts a farm near the top of Copp Road; Maggie T. Sutrov, who created the fiery "Crater Trail;" or Debbie Von Tempsky, who painted "The Slopes."

"We even received "View from Kula San" from Pamela Andelin, who painted this view specifically for this calendar!" Montgomery added.

The KCA Board selected the Kula Elementary PTA because of its work to support teachers and students with programs not funded by the state Department of Education, including art, creative movement and dance classes. The Book Trust was selected because they help children choose and purchase books from the Scholastic Book Club catalogues, enabling students to develop a love of reading.
