Holiday Pops Concert

A Christmas classics celebration.

November 24, 2011
The Maui Weekly

Begin your holiday season on the right note at the Maui Pops Orchestra's Christmas classics concert, "Holiday Pops," on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3:30 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's (MACC) Castle Theater.

Some of your favorite Christmas songs will be played, including "Winter Wonderland," "White Christmas" and "Carol of the Drum." And guest artist Amy Hanaiali'i will perform several of her best-known hits, including songs from her Christmas album.

The event will also feature a holiday give away! One lucky concertgoer will take home a Christmas tree by simply filling out a survey. And following the concert, there will be a milk and cookies reception. Bring your kids for an afternoon full of holiday cheer!

Music Director and Maui Pops Conductor James Durham brings a lifetime of experience to the orchestra. Durham is the recipient of the 2009 Maui County Commission on Culture and the Arts' Pundy Yokouchi Award for his work with the Maui Pops Orchestra. As one of its founders, he is committed to keeping symphonic music accessible and exciting for Maui residents and guests.

"We have a really terrific Holiday Pops concert with Amy Hanaiali'i planned for this season, and I'm looking forward to seeing you!" said Durham.

Hanaiali'i is Hawai'i's top selling female vocalist of all time. She is a five-time Grammy nominee and a 17-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner. All 11 of her albums have been in the top 10 in "Billboard's" world charts. She has headlined numerous times with the Honolulu Symphony Pops and the Matt Catingub Orchestra. In her most recent performance, she headlined the Nashville Symphony. Hanaiali'i has produced Hawai'i's first reality show, "Local Boyz Inc" on OC16.

The 2011-12 concert season includes the "Holiday Pops" concert on Dec. 4; "Gershwin & Broadway" on Jan. 29, 2012, with special guest Hyperion Knight; and "Swing into Spring" on March 18, 2012, with special guests Willie K and Jimmy Borges.

Season tickets for Maui Pops concerts are available at the MACC Box Office; call (808) 242-SHOW or visit www.mauiarts.org.

Individual tickets for the Holiday Pops concert are $45, $35, $25 and $10 (plus applicable fees). Tickets for kids 12 and under are half-price (not applicable to $10 tickets).

The Maui Pops Orchestra is proudly supported by the Hawai'i Tourism Authority, the County of Maui, and in part by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawai'i and by the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as the numerous generous donations from the community.

"The Maui Pops Orchestra is a community orchestra and would not be able to provide orchestral music on Maui without support from the community," said David Padgett, president of the Maui Pops Orchestra. "I hope everyone on Maui takes advantage of a chance to see and hear the beautiful sound of a 30-piece orchestra performing live with terrific guest artists."
