Pet Safety Tips

December 1, 2011
The Maui Weekly

It's Christmas timesuch wonderful holiday foods, decorations, and gatherings with friends and family. But these can present dangers to our pets, so please take extra precautions to make sure your pet stays safe during the Christmas season:

When tree decorating, pick up all tinsel, ribbons, and ornament hooks from the floor. Glittery items like these attract pets as playthings, but pets can get very sick if they ingest them.

Secure the tree to a wall or ceiling with fishing line and a hook to prevent pets from knocking it over.

Unplug tree lights when you're not there, as pets can tangle themselves in the cords.

If your pets show interest in playing with tree decorations, decorate the bottom third of the tree with wood or plastic ornaments that won't break and can't be swallowed.

Keep all gifts that contain human food off the floor so pets are not tempted by the smells. Human treats can be dangerous, even deadly, for pets especially foods containing chocolate, alcohol, raisins, and onions.

Some holiday plants, like poinsettias and mistletoe, are dangerous if your pets chew on them. Keep all holiday plants well out of reach of your pets.

If you are thinking of adding a pet to your family this holiday season, consider adopting one of our orphaned pets into a lifelong loving home. Visit our shelter between 11-4pm 7 days a week. Or visit us at MauiHumaneSociety.org or on Facebook for more about our "Home For The Holidays" programs and events. Happy (and Safe) Holidays everyone!
