December 1, 2011
The Maui Weekly

Haleakala National Park is now accepting applications for Kupukupu 'Aina, a new internship program geared for middle school students in grades six to eight.

The free program will be held March 12 to 16, 2012.

This week-long internship is designed to introduce local youth to park programs and generate interest in careers related to natural resources management, interpretation and facilities management.

Twelve students will be selected through a competitive process to participate in activities that will afford them opportunities to gain hands-on experience working alongside professional staff.

National Park Service officials believe that the program will provide critical stepping stones to help youth develop marketable skills and professional contacts, as well as general knowledge and appreciation for Hawaii's natural areas and species.

Free transportation to the park will be provided from designated sites. Interns are eligible to receive a Living Allowance of $25 per day to help offset the cost of supplies they will need for the program.

Additional details and application packets may be obtained by contacting Kuhea Paracuelles at (808) 572-4452 or Completed applications must be submitted by Jan. 31, 2012.
