The Maui News - The state Commission on Water Resource Management is seeking nominations for two positions on the seven-member panel that has final authority over matters relating to the state Water Code.
The positions include one vacancy, to be filled immediately, and a commission seat opening on July 1 for a member with experience in Hawaiian water rights.
A nominating committee will screen the applicants and send the names of at least three candidates for each open position to the governor. The governor appoints five members of the commission, subject to confirmation by the state Senate. Two commission members, the chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources and the director of the state Department of Health, serve as ex-officio members of the panel.
State law requires that commission members have "substantial experience in the area of water resource management." The position opening in July requires a candidate with "substantial experience or expertise in traditional Hawaiian water resource management techniques and in traditional Hawaiian riparian usage."
Commission members serve without pay, except for reimbursement for expenses, including travel, necessary to do the job. For more information or to download an application form, visit hawaii.gov/dlnr/cwrm.
