Give a homeless pet the gift of a loving, lifelong home this holiday season! Adopting a pet is a gift to yourself, as well. MHS is now offering "Home For The Holidays" adoption specials including "Santa Sundays" (dog adoption fees 50% off), $5 felines all month, and gift bags with all adoptions.
If you do plan to adopt a pet, prepare ahead for your new addition. Pet-proof your house, particularly if you are bringing home a puppy or kitten. Pay special attention to the holiday tree and other decorations. Puppies might chew anything they can get their teeth on including electrical cords, tinsel, and even glass decorations. Kittens might prefer to simply climb the treeor give it a try, anyway!
Cover furniture until you have properly trained your new pet as to where they are allowed to hang out. Cats and kittens are fast learners with a litter box, so make sure they know where it is right away. In a large house, you might put out additional boxes or restrict your cat to a more limited area for a while. Dogs and puppies may need to be house trained, so plan frequent trips outside with lots of praise for a job well done. Restricting their "free roaming" around the house might be wise initially, and crate training can an excellent tool. For more tips on bringing new pets home, visit our website.
Most important, be patient! Your new pet is likely to be nervous and excited, and your understanding and patience will ease the transition for both of you.
