Layaway Santas brighten Christmas for Maui’s less fortunate

January 5, 2012
The Maui Weekly

The Maui News - The 'layaway Santa " phenomena landed right on Maui this Christmas. Maui retailers have reported many instances of strangers paying off layaway bills for shoppers purchasing gifts for the holiday season. Jose Castellanos was one recipient of a layaway Santa. The woman, who declined to give her name, paid for the toy that Castellanos had been purchasing via layaway at a local retail store. She then also bought his daughter a bike and other gifts. Kmart's manager Rick Raglan estimates that about 25 layaway Santas have paid off accounts in total of $5,000. The events often resulted in tears of joy from the recipients.

"It's nice to see that, as tight as times are, there's still people out there giving," Raglan said.
