January 5, 2012
The Maui Weekly

On Friday, Jan. 13, the Freeradicals Projekt will perform their recently released album, "SoulFire Radio," live at Stella Blues Caf in Kihei.

Special guest, renowned British deejay Paul Gotel, will warm up the night with his "hip-notizing" dance tunes along with special performances all through the evening.

"Don't miss the show of the year," said Stella owner and operator Kale Boverman. "There's limited occupancy, so get your ticket today! It's going to be a sold-out show!"

Comprised of a diverse collection of individuals who draw inspiration from a wide range of sources, the Freeradicals Projekt covers all the bases of soul music, from 1990’s, hip-hop sounds made famous by bands such as the Fugees, to ultra-smooth stylings a la Marvin Gaye. Conceived by guitarist/songwriter Rama Covarrubias, the Freeradicals Projekt is a fusion of funk, soul, alternative/jazz and hip-hop. This seven-piece band, relatively new to the scene, is making their recent string of sold-out headlining shows not only through trendy electro effects and beat loops, but also through old-fashioned techniques, using traditional instruments to lay down grooves that are far too juicy for anyone to resist.

Comprised of a diverse collection of individuals who draw inspiration from a wide range of sources, the Freeradicals Projekt covers all the bases of soul music, from 1990's, hip-hop sounds made famous by bands such as the Fugees, to ultra-smooth stylings a la Marvin Gaye.

With vocals from Francisco Perez and Shea Derrick, Ami Schorr on sax, Michael Lawton on percussion and Josh Greenbaum on drums, the band creates grooves inspired by Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix and The Roots, to name a few. Add passionate vocals (such as Ella Fitzgerald's) and you have the Freeradicals Projekt.

They make mood-changing music that will turn around even the downtrodden, uplifting both body and spirit.

Presale tickets are $15; $20 at the door. Tickets are available at Request Music in Wailuku, The Wine Corner in Pa'ia and Choice Health Bar in Lahaina.

Doors open at 9 p.m. Ages 21 and over admitted with identification.

Call Stella's at (808) 874-3779 for more information.
