Maui Home Delivery

Produce delivery service provides a shortcut between local farmers and customers.

Try as I may, I just can't recall the last time three good lookin' guys showed up at my place with a head of lettuce.

Okay, maybe I should have expected it when I phoned Maui Home Delivery, since the company's mission is to provide fresh fruits and vegetables right to your door. Lucky for me, the company's founders arrived for the interview with a company tote bag "basket" filled with luscious, fresh lettuce, zucchini, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, an orange, bananas and limes. I couldn't have been more delighted had they presented me with roses!

Chilean brothers Ernesto and Andres Estrada and ex-Californian James Yunker met on Maui several years ago through mutual friends.

Maui Home Delivery business partners (left to right) Ernesto Estrada, James Yunker and Andres Estrada will deliver fresh, local produce and a smile each week to your home or workplace.

"We talked about going into business together," James said. "And since Ernesto had worked with produce growers setting up a successful home delivery service in Santiago, Chile, it seemed like this could be a good business for us to start here on Maui."

James sets up the accounts and delivery schedules while Ernesto and Andres pick up and deliver the fresh produce to their ever-increasing client base.

"The idea behind our business is to bring local produce to everybody," Andres said. "We want to create a demand so the growers will grow more, because more and more people want local fresh produce. We want to be the service part of that chain."

Ernesto added that Maui Home Delivery aims to be the shortcut between farmers and customers.

"And we want to charge low enough so every family can have fresh produce delivered right to their door every week," James said. "Ideally, we purchase the produce the same day we deliver, and right now, most of our clients are in the Kihei-Wailea area. Friday is our delivery day, but as we expand, we'll offer more delivery days."

He added that Ernesto, who has an agriculture degree from Santiago, is the one who keeps an eye out for what's the freshest.

"And as long as we get the order by Wednesday, we can deliver by Friday," James said.

Andres said about 90 percent of the produce in stores on Maui is imported. "What I hear from people is that they want locally grown produce, and we are providing that."

"And for sure you're going to spend more at a supermarket," Ernesto said.

James chimed in, "Our service does the shopping for you. We save you not only money, but also gas, time and energy."

Maui Home Delivery presently offers two delivery options. Option one is the "Special of the Week," which allows Ernesto and Andres to select a variety of fruit and vegetables for you.

"Most orders are for a single basket, and that is enough for one or two people for an entire week," James said.

Option two is the "You Pick It" delivery for those who want to choose their own fruits and vegetables.

"And this coming year, we're going to add specialty baskets that will focus on specific meals: Salad Baskets, Stir-Fry Baskets (with veggies you saut), and Fruit Smoothie Baskets (all fruit)," James said. "Come summer, we may even add a Barbecue Basket with all the makings for potato salad and coleslaw."

The minimum order amount is $25 plus tax and a $9.99 delivery fee. The company also offers a six-month membership program for $49 plus tax that includes free delivery no matter how many times you order.

"We also give a percentage discount on orders of multiple baskets," James said. "Three baskets will easily feed a family of six for a week." He said some clients order weekly, while others order every other week.

"And we not only deliver to your home but also to your place of work if you want," James said. "And our elderly clients really like the convenience of our service, too."

According to James most clients leave a cooler outside their home where the baskets are deposited. The next week, Ernesto and Andres replace them with new ones filled with your order.

"All produce items are guaranteed for at least five days, assuming proper storage and handling after delivery," their Website states. "If you decide your produce does not live up to our guarantee, we will credit your account for that portion of the produce on your very next scheduled delivery."

Maui Home Delivery accepts payment online via PayPal, as well as personal checks and cash.

Check out the company's Website for yourself at mauihomedelivery.com for more information, to place your order and receive ongoing updates.
