Couple sues MPD over wrong address search

Maui News - April and Norman Freeland have filed a federal lawsuit against the Maui Police Department after an alleged raid on their home. The couple claim that police held them outside their residence for more than a half hour while the house was searched.

Attorney Sam MacRoberts, who is representing the couple, said they were never shown a search warrant and the police remained in the home even after they realized it was the wrong location.

Maui County Deputy Corporation Counsel Moana Lutey said police were only in the home 10 minutes and exited immediately when they discovered they were at the wrong address. They then gave the Freelands information on how to file a complaint with either the Police Commission or MPD's Internal Affairs division.

"The Freelands were shown a copy of the warrant at the time, but they weren't provided the warrant because they weren't the target of the warrant," Lutey said.
