The Maui News - Members of Occupy Wall Street Maui and others demonstrated in front of Monsanto Monday through Sunday, Jan. 23 to 29. The Monsanto location in Kihei was chosen to illustrate the group's opposition to genetically modified organism (GMOs) crops grown in Hawai'i.
"There has been very little peer-reviewed scientific research done on GMO crops," said Ben Wilson, one of the group's organizers in a press release. "That which has been done shows overwhelmingly negative results, and the adverse health and environmental effects of GMO are becoming increasingly obvious and alarming."
The group is calling for public accountability from the company and wishes to alert officials and others about what it says are damaging business practices.
The demonstration was highlighted by music performances, informational workshops and marches. The group's organizers estimated that crowds of up to 35 people at a time gathered for various events, which were held at Monsanto's Maui facility on the corner of Pi'ilani Highway and Kanani Road.
