The Maui County Council gave its final vote of approval to an alcohol ban at Kalama and Cove Parks last week.
Councilmember Mike White expressed support after hearing graphic testimony of obscene behavior displayed by intoxicated park patrons. "This is a park specifically designed for youth activities," he said.
Similar bans have already been passed for South Maui Community Park, Charley Young Beach and Kama'ole Beach Park I. The vote for Kalama and Cove parks was 8-0. Councilmember Mike Victorino was excused.
The bill was originally introduced by Councilmember Don Couch, who also submitted the bill that led to the alcohol ban at South Maui Community Park. He cited the use of the park by families as a major factor in deciding to introduce both bills.
Opponents of the bills have expressed concerns about legislation that affect personal freedoms.
