The state Department of Transportation (DOT) announced the permanent closure of a section of Kala Road from Hana Highway to Eena Street (adjacent to the section of Haleakala Highway makai of Hana Highway), effective Wednesday, Feb. 8, near the Kahului Airport.
In a collaborative agreement by DOT and Maui County, access gates will be locked at both ends of this section of Kala Road in the interest of public safety, due to an increase in illegal dumping, brush fires and criminal activity.
Public access will be reopened in the event of an emergency or evacuation with gate keys issued to first responders, county and civil defense officials.
