As local residents of South Maui, we do not want a gigantic Mainland big-box retail center and outlet chain built in our backyard, on the foothills of Mt. Haleakala and mauka of Pi'ilani Highway. We believe the impact would be too great, and that it would be irresponsible development in terms of the severe disadvantages, especially the massive increase in water and power usage.
Also, we're concerned about the increased traffic and congestion, the increased light and noise pollution (we love the quiet and we love to see the stars here--and so does the astronomical observatory just above us), the possibly devastating impact on locally owned businesses, and therefore, local culture as well.
We do not want to be like every other drab Mainland suburb with its endless cookie-cutter stores and lack of diversity. As tourists, we come here to get away from all that.
This is a unique place with people who deserve to make living wages and not the minimum wages guaranteed by national brand-name big-box stores. This would not be a benefit to this community; it would be a huge financial gain to Mainland companies that want to use our land for profit.
There are many important and pressing projects to benefit da 'aina and 'ohana here in South Maui. Please listen to the voice of the people and let's put our focus on these real issues instead. Thank you!
