Buyer beware

February 16, 2012
The Maui Weekly

Perhaps you have been to the Kahului swap meet recently and seen the banner and booth advertising 1,500-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets. Any size, any color--just $50 a set until recently (now they are $60). "Feel how soft they are, and they get softer with each washing. Compare prices with Walmart, Macy's and Costco. Such a bargain."

They give you a free, reusable tote bag that carries their Website address, where you can find the location where they will be selling the sheet sets that week.

For health reasons, I Googled and found that these are not 100 percent Egyptian cotton. If you read the very small print on the package, you will see that they are comprised of high-strength micro-fibers made in China. They are a synthetic petroleum product being marketed as Egyptian cotton.

Is this the way to treat our neighbors or scam out visitors at the swap meet?
