The beach at Makena State Park was closed today by Maui County lifeguards due to a shark sighted about 11 a.m. at the park. The shark was estimated at 10 to 12 feet long and was seen about 10 to 15 yards from shore by a lifeguard as he was entering the water.
Signs have been posted and DLNR Enforcement (DOCARE) officers assisted county lifeguards in notifying beachgoers.
The beach is closed a mile in either direction, from Maluaka Beach to the northern boundary of Ahihi-Kina'u Natural Area Reserve.
Two lifeguards are monitoring near-shore waters on jet skis. Lifeguards and DOCARE said they will re-assess reopening the beach later today.
No further sightings were reported, so the beaches were reopened by 2:30 p.m.
