The Maui News - After years of planning and funding delays, the Kahului Airport access road and parking lot expansion projects have money lined up to start construction in mid-2013. Funding for the projects has been secured, state Department of Transportation consultant Karlynn Fukuda of Munekiyo & Hiraga Inc. told the Maui Planning Commission on Tuesday, as a time extension was sought for the projects.
The long-awaited access road will allow motorists to bypass Kahului's congested Dairy Road.
The project will be built in two stages, said House Transportation Committee Chairman Joe Souki, a Democrat representing residents of Kahakuloa, Wailuku and Waikapu. The first segment of the road will go from Mokulele Highway past the dead end at Home Depot to Hana Highway. The second phase will cross the highway on the Paia side of Big Kmart and Costco and go to the airport.
"It's about time," Souki said. "I've been working on it probably six years."
