New plan to save monkeypods

March 8, 2012
The Maui Weekly

The Maui News - A plan to save four hotly contested monkeypods fronting Maui Schooner in South Kihei is being considered by county officials. The trees' supporters say the decision to move the trees is not a solution. Activists from Maui Outdoor Circle, Maui County Arborist Committee and Kihei Community Association Street Tree Committee are planning a sign-waving demonstration in opposition of the plan.

Kihei resident Marilyn Colver nominated the monkeypods for the "exceptional trees" list. "We want the shade trees there," she said. "We would have loss of shade, loss of habitat, loss of wind control and loss of beauty."

The county has been ruminating what to do about the trees since last year. The root system has damaged the surrounding sidewalk and nearby parking lot.
